Description
A thread plug gauge is a precision tool used to check the dimensions of internal threads in nuts or similar components. It helps ensure that the threads are manufactured within specified tolerances, which is crucial for proper assembly and functionality in mechanical applications.
GO and NO-GO Gauges
-
GO Gauge: The GO gauge is designed to check the minimum acceptable size of the internal threads. For a part to be considered acceptable, the GO gauge should fit smoothly into the threaded hole without excessive force. This indicates that the threads are within the required specifications for assembly.
-
NO-GO Gauge: The NO-GO gauge checks the maximum allowable size of the internal threads. It should not fit more than a few turns into the threaded hole. If the NO-GO gauge can be threaded in more than two turns, the part is deemed out of specification and should be rejected.
Usage of Thread Plug Gauges
-
Double-Ended Design: For smaller threaded parts, thread plug gauges are often double-ended, with one end for the GO gauge and the other for the NO-GO gauge. For larger parts, these may be separate tools.
-
Inspection Process: To use a thread plug gauge, first insert the GO gauge into the threaded hole. If it passes through easily, proceed to check with the NO-GO gauge. If the NO-GO gauge threads in more than the allowed limit, the part fails inspection.
